Well I took advantage of one of my days off work this winter to clean part of my basement and the best part is that I got paid to do it.
When I bought the building there was a bunch of junk and "supplies" that I'll probably never use scattered throughout my basement. I also had the boiler guys leave the old heat pump and expansion tanks when they replaced them. So I finally rounded up all 180 pounds of steel (shredder), some brass valves (dirty yellow) from the boiler and plumbing pipes, and a bucket full of insulated copper wires and broken Christmas lights and got rid of it at the scrap yard.
Now I just have to sort what "supplies" to pitch and which to keep for later. Mostly panes of glass, scattered tiles, a toilet, and many bags of equipment from past renovation attempts (so like paint brushes, rollers, cleaning supplies, etc. that might or might not be reusable).
I've also got a bunch of piles of dirt scattered throughout the basement. Allegedly they are the result of cutting a back door in the foundation wall so that the new boiler could be brought down and installed. The previous owner didn't own the back lot at the time so they couldn't just dump it outside on the hill before they cinder-blocked the foundation shut again. Not sure if I believe that story, but I'm planning on using the dirt to backfill the coal chutes as I wall them up and then dump the rest of the dirt on the back hill. Eventually I want to reopen the cinder-blocked doorway for better access to the basement when I build a patio over the hill like in my original plan here: http://buckeyestreetventures.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-plan-revealed.html
