The fourth floor of the building somehow was disconnected from the rest of the building during the last renovation of the building despite its vast amount of space. It has smaller windows on the north (street) and south sides and 7 full windows that overlook the courtyard.
I wasn't able to get up there before buying because all access to it had been dry-walled over. So now that I own it I brought a saw and made a way to get up there. The joists make it a tight squeeze and a taller ladder would probably be a better idea, but I really wanted to know what was up there.
For scale, the entry hole is under that second window. |
It's almost completely open back to front until you hit a paper thin wall that hangs from the ceiling (with a pretty neat old door).
One thing that I learned about this space was how it was used. In both of the long sections of this 4th floor in this U shaped building, there were hooks on opposite ends of the space, which were used for indoor cloths drying during the winter months in the pre-dryer era.
This room in the NW corner is pretty tight and luckily the wall is only about a half inch thick so that I can open the space back up easily. It's hanging from the the beam that has all the laundry hooks (picture to right).
Then as we progress through the old door to the other side of the U, we've got to crawl through a bashed in brick wall. Originally this wasn't a U-shaped building, but two separate ones.
A look back at where we came from and into the courtyard. |
The next room, and this side of the building in general, is very rough. The roofers that put the new roof on in 2007 left a mess and a bunch of their trash (more in a different room).
A look from front to back window. |
Another plastered room in the middle of this side with the laundry hooks above the doorways and across the walls.
