Winter icicles

Over the the winter we got a lot of snow. As in more than we every have in the recorded history of Cincinnati. So naturally, many buildings had a hard time handling the snow and a frequent sight around the neighborhood were gigantic icicles that would forms as gutters, downspouts, and cornice box gutters leaked. Mine was no different unfortunately. The repair work that I had done last summer to stop the gutter box leaks must have been pulled back open by the freeze/thaw cycle and allowed more water to get through.

Here's a modest look of the icicles that formed (throughout the winter they often grew much bigger to the point that I needed to knock them down so they wouldn't possibly fall on my tenants):

As you can see, the main culprit was the downspout in the front that conveniently dripped right in front of the entry way and formed a nice layer of ice on the sidewalk below for my tenants to potentially slip on all winter. It was fun salting and scrapping; trust me.

The icicles shown are babies. They got to monster size multiple times throughout the winter where I thought they might break the light when I knocked them down with how massive they were.

Here's a better idea, but even these were just what remained after I knocked them down.

And then some also leaked through one of the cornices:

The back gutter leaked a little on the corner too, but really a lot of these leaks were a result of the excessive snowfalls and the need for some sealing between gutter sections.

Looks like I'll be back on the roof this spring/summer again.
